Why the fast build-out?

Canada's 6.1% duty on Chinese-built EVs, versus the 100% U.S. tariff, makes Canada one of the most favourable developed markets for BYD's North American push. That's the practical reason BYD has moved aggressively on Canadian retail while sitting out the U.S.

BYD is currently the only Chinese passenger-vehicle manufacturer registered with Transport Canada's Appendix G preclearance registry, putting it ahead of Geely, Chery, and others on the regulatory timeline.

Expected rollout

  • Mid-2026: demo units arrive at early Toronto locations
  • Late 2026: first retail sales, GTA-focused
  • 2027: expansion to Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Ottawa, and beyond
